Renaissance Porn Star: The Saga of Pietro Aretino, the World’s Greatest Hustler

ADVANCE PRAISE FOR RENAISSANCE PORN STAR
THE SAGA OF PIETRO ARETINO: THE WORLD’S GREATEST HUSTLER
Sex, drugs, and the Medicis. A story of murder, revenge, art, pornography, and celebration with an all-star cast of characters: Dante, Boccaccio, Machiavelli, Michelangelo, a klatch of mafi a-don-style popes, and Shakespeare. A tale that turns deep, deep erudition into exquisite sweets for the heart and
mind.
—Howard Bloom, author of *The Genius of the Beast: A Radical Re-Vision of Capitalism*
If Jan Wenner had given Hunter S. Thompson an assignment to write a historical essay of Renaissance sexuality and literature, the resulting pages might have looked something like *Renaissance Porn Star*: raw, uncensored, clearly mad, and quite brilliant.
—Jess Winfi eld, author of *My name is Will*
Like a buried treasure unearthed, *Renaissance Porn Star* sheds new light on how the Italian icon of the Renaissance,
Pietro Aretino, helped shape an awakened world. Mark Lamonica mixes his amazing attention to
historical detail and breathes new life into Shakespeare.
—Thelma Reyna, Ph.D. author of *The Heavens Weep for Us*
What art restoration has done for paintings, Mark Lamonica has done through a historical account of Pietro Aretino that wipes clean the whitewash of our puritanical perspective on the Renaissance over the past several hundred years. Not unlike a newly restored masterpiece, *Renaissance Porn Star* is both beautiful and shocking.
—Adam Hall, Shakespeare scholar
Mark Lamonica is an accomplished photographer
and author of three highly acclaimed books: *Junkyard Dogs and William Shakespeare* (1997); co-author of *Rio LA: Tales from the Los Angeles River* (2001); named “a best book of the year” by the Los Angeles Times Book Review. *Whacking Buddha: The Mysterious World of Shakespeare and Zen Buddhism* (2005); hailed as a work of “spiritual literary dynamite.” He is at
work on a new book about the Devil.

Remembered (Bound by Time, #1)

Penny Money is a research writer by day and time traveler by night. Well … one night, anyway. And what a night it was! Even better — it could be the beginning of a romance that spans multiple decades and two continents.
Penny’s boss, literary wonder Macsen Yates, is sexy, debonair, and worldly. He selected her from hundreds of other candidates to help “Americanize” his works for the United States market. Did Mac choose Penny because of her knowledge of European history? Or was his choice simply destined to happen?
When Penny receives a postcard and small package from Mac, little does she realize that they will become the catalyst for a travel back in time to Wales, 30 years earlier, when Mac was a young man and the same age as Penny.
The friendship and sensual tension that has been building for over a year combusts into undeniable passion when Penny and Mac meet in person for the first time. Their amorous encounter makes Penny realize that her trip through time was no fluke. Complicating matters, Mac wants to rewrite history with Penny, and not the woman history says he will wed.
But can Penny make a promise to Mac, when her heart tells her that her journey has just begun?

Remarkable Creatures

A voyage of discovery, two remarkable women, and an extraordinary time and place enrich this New York Times bestselling novel by Tracy Chevalier, author of At the Edge of the Orchard and Girl With a Pearl Earring.

On the windswept, fossil-strewn beaches of the English coast, poor and uneducated Mary Anning learns that she has a unique gift: ”the eye” to spot fossils no one else can see. When she uncovers an unusual fossilized skeleton in the cliffs near her home, she sets the religious community on edge, the townspeople to gossip, and the scientific world alight. After enduring bitter cold, thunderstorms, and landslips, her challenges only grow when she falls in love with an impossible man.

Mary soon finds an unlikely champion in prickly Elizabeth Philpot, a middle-class spinster who shares her passion for scouring the beaches. Their relationship strikes a delicate balance between fierce loyalty, mutual appreciation, and barely suppressed envy, but ultimately turns out to be their greatest asset.

Remarkable Creatures is a stunning historical novel that follows the story of two extraordinary 19th century fossil hunters who changed the scientific world forever.

**Recensie(s)**

Praise for Tracy Chevalier Evokes entire landscapes…a master of voices. –New York Times Book Review (on Falling Angels) Absorbing…[Chevalier] creates a world reminiscent of a Vermeer interior: suspended in a particular moment, it transcends its time and place. –The New Yorker (on Girl With a Pearl Earring) Chevalier admirably weaves historical figures and actual events into a compelling narrative. –San Francisco Chronicle (on Remarkable Creatures) Chevalier’s signature talent lies in bringing alive the ordinary day-to-dayness of the past…lovingly evoked. –Elle (on Burning Bright) Chevalier’s ringing prose is as radiantly efficient as well-tended silver. –Entertainment Weekly (on Falling Angels)

Relief Valve

If you dig up the past, be prepared to get dirty.

The Plumber’s Mate, Book 2
It hasn’t been all smooth sailing since plumber Tom Paretski and P.I. Phil Morrison became connected at the heart, if not always at Tom’s dodgy hip. Neither of their families has been shy about voicing their disapproval, which hasn’t helped Tom’s uneasy relationship with his prickly older sister, Cherry.
But when Cherry is poisoned at her own engagement party, the horror of her near death has Tom’s head spinning with possible culprits. Is it her fiancé Gregory, a cathedral canon with an unfortunate manner and an alarming taste for taxidermy? Someone from her old writers’ circle, which she left after a row? Or could the attack be connected to her work as a barrister?
Phil is just as desperate to solve the case before someone ends up dead—and he fears it could be Tom. At least one of their suspects has a dark secret to hide, which makes Tom’s sixth sense for finding things like a target painted on his back…

Warning: Contains a strong, silent, macho PI; a cheeky, chirpy, cat-owning plumber; and a gag gift from beyond the grave that’ll put the cat firmly among the pigeons.

Relentless

#1New York Timesbestselling master of suspense Dean Koontz delivers a mesmerizing new thriller that explores the razor-thin line between the best and worst of human nature—and the anarchy simmering just beneath society’s surface—as a likeable, successful family man is drawn into a confrontation with a foe of unimaginable malice…. Bestselling novelist Cullen “Cubby” Greenwich is a lucky man and he knows it. He makes a handsome living doing what he enjoys. His wife, Penny, a children’s book author and illustrator, is the love of his life. Together they have a brilliant six-year-old, Milo, affectionately dubbed “Spooky,” and a non-collie named Lassie, who’s all but part of the family. So Cubby knows he shouldn’t let one bad review of his otherwise triumphant new book get to him—even if it does appear in the nation’s premier newspaper and is penned by the much-feared, seldom-seen critic, Shearman Waxx. Cubby knows the best thing to do is ignore the gratuitously vicious, insulting, and inaccurate comments. Penny knows it, even little Milo knows it. If Lassie could talk, she’d tell Cubby to ignore them, too. Ignore Shearman Waxx and his poison pen is just what Cubby intends to do. Until he happens to learn where the great man is taking his lunch. Cubby just wants to get a look at the mysterious recluse whose mere opinion can make or break a career—or a life. But Shearman Waxx isn’t what Cubby expects; and neither is the escalating terror that follows what seemed to be an innocent encounter. For Waxx gives criticism; he doesn’t take it. He has ways of dealing with those who cross him that Cubby is only beginning to fathom. Soon Cubby finds himself in a desperate struggle with a relentless sociopath, facing an inexorable assault on far more than his life. Fearless, funny, utterly compelling,Relentlessis Dean Koontz at his riveting best, an unforgettable tale of the fragile bonds that hold together all that we most cherish—and of those who would tear those bonds asunder.

Regular Sex ~ Issue 4 ~ Meet Me

Excerpt from Issue 4:
HUEY
I don’t think I’m imagining it. She keeps looking over at me today, I’m sure of it.
I’ve been writing in the library for three weeks now, a half-hearted attempt to save both my money and my heart from the effect of the endless espressos that accompany trying to work in the local cafe. It’s quite charming as libraries go, housed in an old Victorian building with lots of side rooms and lamp-lit nooks. I’m missing my coffee hit but it’s certainly a charismatic sort of place, and right from day one I’ve caught one of the librarians watching me out of the corner of her perfectly made up eye.
I’ll tell you something else I’m not imagining, either. She wears stockings to work. I haven’t been letching, but sometimes when she clears the books from the table I’m working at or comes close by to file away a pile of returned books, I can see the outline of the catches pressing beneath her skirt.
That’s not normal, is it? I mean, it is in my fantasies, but most women don’t wear stockings on a day-to-day basis in reality, do they? The fact that she does tells me stuff about her. It tells me that she’s confident, and that she embraces her own sexuality. That’s not a sexist thing to say, is it? I don’t mean it to be. It’s a compliment. I love that she’s not apologetic about the fact she’s f******* beautiful, that she chooses to wear clothes that celebrate rather than shroud her body. Make no mistake about it, this girl is packing some serious pin-up curves; she looks like she belongs in the nineteen fifties drinking cocktails with Marilyn Monroe rather than stacking sci-fi books alphabetically, as she appears to be tasked with this afternoon.

‘I don’t care if he’s signed the contract! He goes or I do, Art, it’s as simple as that.’
Of all the men in all the world Art could have chosen to replace Stanley with at the last minute, why did he have to go and choose Reuben Turner? Stanley is the leading man in the new West End production I’m starring in and I have to practically hump him, which is fine because I’m an actress and I can detach. Even a last minute change of actor shouldn’t pose too much of a problem, except for the small matter that I used to be married to Reuben Turner and there is no way on God’s earth I’m having sex with him, even simulated sex with my knickers still firmly on.

The Rediscovery of Man: The Complete Short Science Fiction of Cordwainer Smith

The third story in this volume takes place 16,000 years in the future. When you realize that the 33 stories are ordered chronologically, you begin to grasp the scale of Cordwainer Smith’s creation. Regimes, technologies, planets, moralities, religions, histories all rise and fall through his millennia.
These are futuristic tales told as myth, as legend, as a history of a distant and decayed past. Written in an unadorned voice reminiscent of James Tiptree Jr., Smith’s visions are dark and pessimistic, clearly a contrast from the mood of SF in his time; in the 1940s, ’50s, and ’60s it was still thought that science would cure the ills of humanity. In Smith’s tales, space travel takes a horrendous toll on those who pilot the ships through the void. After reaching perfection, the lack of strife stifles humanity to a point of decay and stagnation; the Instrumentality of Mankind arises in order to stir things up. Many stories describe moral dilemmas involving the humanity of the Underpeople, beings evolved from animals into humanlike forms.
Stories not to be missed in this collection include “Scanners Live in Vain,” “The Dead Lady of Clown Town,” “Under Old Earth,” “The Crime and the Glory of Commander Suzdal,” “Mother Hitton’s Littul Kittons,” and the truly disturbing “A Planet Called Shayol.” Serious SF fans should not pass up the chance to experience Cordwainer Smith’s complex, distinctive vision of the far future.

A handful of lucky heroes and some traitors amongst his own, and the great Kinslayer was no more.
Celestaine was one such hero and now she has tasked herself to correct the worst excesses of the Kinslayer and bring light back to her torn-up world. With two Yorughan companions she faces fanatics, war criminals and the monsters and minions the Kinslayer left behind as the fragile alliances of the war break down into feuding, greed and mistrust.
The Kinslayer may be gone, but he cast a long shadow she may never truly escape.
