Bloody River Blues

Jeffery Deaver is the *New York Times* bestselling author of *The Empty Chair* and *The Devil’s Teardrop.* Here his trademark “ticking-bomb suspense” *(People)* explodes off the page in another heart-stopping thriller. Hollywood location scout John Pellam thought the scenic backwater town of Maddox, Missouri, would be the perfect site for an upcoming *Bonnie and Clyde* -style film. But after real bullets leave two people dead and one cop paralyzed, he’s more sought after than the Barrow Gang. Pellam had unwittingly wandered onto the crime scene just minutes before the brutal hits. Now the feds and local police want him to talk. Mob enforcers want him silenced. And a mysterious blonde just wants him. Trapped in a town full of sinister secrets and deadly deceptions, Pellam fears that death will imitate art, as the film shoot — and his life — race toward a breathtakingly bloody climax.

Blood Gifts (A Final Formula Story)

Seventeen-year-old Ian is used to pressure. Born into a necromancer family, he and his twin brother Lex exhibited uncommon magical potential at an early age that led their father to expect great things—from them both. That is until Lex’s blood gift fails to manifest. Or so everyone believes. For the past five years, Ian has been keeping a secret. A secret that—if it got out—would see his brother shunned, or worse. Lex does have a blood gift, but not every gift is a blessing, and not every recipient can manage the talent in his blood. As Lex’s sanity begins to slip, Ian knows the responsibility to raise his family’s fortunes is on his shoulders, and his alone. When he is offered an apprenticeship with one of the most influential men in the necromancer community, Lex convinces Ian that the connection would offer their family even more if Ian were to marry his elderly mentor’s “spinster” niece. Ian’s plan takes an unexpected turn when he discovers that Isabelle is not a spinster. She’s a young, beautiful, intelligent woman who, unfortunately, wants nothing to do with him. Now Ian must find a way to win her over before Lex attempts to elevate their family, his way. Blindfold Game

In Thailand, two men hire a pair of international pirates to smuggle them, a small team of mercenaries, and some equipment aboard a freighter at a Russian port. It’s frighteningly easy, and the ship sails east, toward the western coast of North America. The crew onboard the U.S. Coast Guard cutter *Sojourner Truth* , stationed in the Bering Sea along the Maritime Boundary Line, is busier than usual, catching fishing vessels on the wrong side of the line, but it’s not enough to cause undue alarm. In Washington, D.C., a CIA analyst has been hearing rumors about the sale of radioactive material and military equipment on the black market in deep Russia but can’t get it confirmed. The analyst, Hugh Rincon, originally from Alaska and more keenly aware than most in Washington of Alaska’s vulnerability with its air force base and proximity to the Far East, begins to piece it all together. He can’t get anyone to take him seriously, however, least of all the director of the CIA. Then Hugh learns that his estranged wife, Sarah Lange, is second in command on the *Sojourner Truth* in the Bering Sea at the heart of the potential conflict. And the chase is on. The first stand-alone thriller from the pen of Dana Stabenow, Edgar Award–winning author of many crime novels, delivers a nail-biting, action-packed read in *Blindfold Game* , international in scope and frighteningly real.

Black Spark

I watched in horror as dark magic sprang from my hand faster than an imp after your socks. I didn’t know my name, let alone that I had such power. The man was dead. I panicked. I ran.
How was I to know I was a dark magic enforcer, tasked with keeping magic hidden from the world? Yeah, total noob move, I know.
But my memory is returning, and the Hidden have given me twenty-four hours to make amends. Cover it up. Finish the job I was given, or else. Failure isn’t an option. Well, it is, but I like me, and I like being alive.
Time is running out as I battle to make things right and exact revenge on those that took so much from me. Easier said than done as I deal with angry mages, bitey zombies, oversexed imps, creepy necromancers, and grumpy trolls—and those are just my friends!—all while trying to stop myself falling in love with my best friend, Kate, who just so happens to be a hot vampire.
I’m Faz Pound, a.k.a. Black Spark, Dark Magic Enforcer, and time is running out.
At least I have my looks. For now.

Biographia Literaria

It has been my lot to have had my name introduced both in conversation, and in print, more frequently than I find it easy to explain, whether I consider the fewness, unimportance, and limited circulation of my writings, or the retirement and distance, in which I have lived, both from the literary and political world. Most often it has been connected with some charge which I could not acknowledge, or some principle which I had never entertained. Nevertheless, had I had no other motive or incitement, the reader would not have been troubled with this exculpation. What my additional purposes were, will be seen in the following pages. It will be found, that the least of what I have written concerns myself personally. I have used the narration chiefly for the purpose of giving a continuity to the work, in part for the sake of the miscellaneous reflections suggested to me by particular events, but still more as introductory to a statement of my principles in Politics, Religion, and Philosophy, and an application of the rules, deduced from philosophical principles, to poetry and criticism. But of the objects, which I proposed to myself, it was not the least important to effect, as far as possible, a settlement of the long continued controversy concerning the true nature of poetic diction; and at the same time to define with the utmost impartiality the real poetic character of the poet, by whose writings this controversy was first kindled, and has been since fuelled and fanned.

The Better Angels of Our Nature

###
**’The most inspiring book I’ve ever read’ Bill Gates, 2017** **’A brilliant, mind-altering book … Everyone should read this astonishing book’* Guardian ** ***’Will change the way you see the world’* Daily Mail*** Shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize 2012 Wasn’t the twentieth century the most violent in history? In his extraordinary, epic book Steven Pinker shows us that this is wrong, telling the story of humanity in a completely new and unfamiliar way. From why cities make us safer to how books bring about peace, Pinker weaves together history, philosophy and science to examine why we are less likely to die at another’s hand than ever before, how it happened and what it tells us about our very natures. ‘May prove to be one of the great books of our time … he writes like an angel’ *Economist* ‘Masterly, a supremely important book … For anyone interested in human nature, it is engrossing’ *The New York Times* ‘Marvellous … riveting and myth-destroying’ *New Statesman* ‘A marvellous synthesis of science, history and storytelling, written in Pinker’s distinctively entertaining and clear personal style … I was astonished by the extent to which violence has declined in every shape, form and scale’ *Financial Times* ‘An outstandingly fruitful read, with fascinating nuggets on almost every page’ *Sunday Times* , Books of the Year

Beren and Luthien

***New York Times* Bestseller**
“A good introduction to LOTR fans nervous about taking on *The Silmarillion*, and also gives longtime fans a fascinating look at the Tolkiens’ myth-making process.” – *EntertainmentWeekly.com*
“A beautiful book.”* – San Antonio Express-News*
“With eloquence and diligence and care, the son reconstructs and retraces the father’s journey, pursuing the tale through draft after draft as Tolkien pursued his vision of Middle-earth.” – NPR.org
The epic tale of Beren and Luthien became an essential element in the evolution of *The Silmarillion*, the myths and legends of J.R.R. Tolkien’s First Age of the World. Always key to the story is the fate that shadowed their love: Beren was a mortal man, Luthien an immortal Elf. Her father, a great Elvish lord, imposed on Beren an impossible task before he might wed Luthien: to rob the greatest of all evil beings, Melkor, of a Silmaril.
Painstakingly restored from Tolkien’s manuscripts and presented for the first time as a continuous and standalone story, *Beren and Luthien* reunites fans of *The Hobbit* and *The Lord of the Rings* with Elves and Men, along with the rich landscape and creatures unique to Tolkien’s Middle-earth. Christopher Tolkien tells the story in his father’s own words by giving its original form as well as prose and verse passages from later texts that illustrate the narrative as it changed.
