Core Java Volume I–Fundamentals

**The #1 Guide for Serious Programmers: Fully Updated for Java SE 9, 10 & 11**   Cay Horstmann’s ***Core Java, Volume I—Fundamentals, Eleventh Edition,** * is the definitive guide to writing robust, maintainable code with the Java SE 9, 10, and 11 language and libraries. Horstmann writes for serious programmers who use Java in production projects, and need a deep, practical understanding of the language and API. Throughout, he delivers what you need most: hundreds of real (non-toy) examples revealing the most powerful, effective ways to get the job done.   Updated examples reflect the new var keyword and take advantage of improvements in the Java API. You’ll learn how to use JShell’s new Read-Eval-Print Loop (REPL) for more rapid and exploratory development, and apply new features of the APIs for streams, input/output, processes, and concurrency.   In this first of two volumes, Horstmann offers in-depth coverage of fundamental Java and UI programming, including object-oriented programming, generics, collections, lambda expressions, Swing design, concurrency, and functional programming. If you’re an experienced programmer moving to Java SE 9, 10, or 11, there’s no better source for expert insight, solutions, and code. * Master foundational techniques, idioms, and best practices for writing superior Java code * Efficiently implement encapsulation and inheritance * Use sound principles of object-oriented design * Leverage the full power of objects with interfaces, lambda expressions, and inner classes * Harden programs through effective exception handling and debugging * Write safer, more reusable code with generic programming * Improve performance and efficiency with Java’s standard collections * Build cross-platform GUIs with the Swing toolkit * Fully utilize multicore processors with Java’s improved concurrency
See *Core Java, Volume II—Advanced Features, Eleventh Edition* (ISBN-13: 978-0-13-516631-4), for expert coverage of Java 9, 10, and 11 enterprise features, the module system, annotations, networking, security, and advanced UI programming.   *Register your book for convenient access to downloads, updates, and/or corrections as they become available. Coding with Minecraft: Build Taller, Farm Faster, Mine Deeper, and Automate the Boring Stuff

**A hands-on introduction to coding that teaches you how to program bots to do cool things in the game you love–Minecraft! This book takes the robotic “turtle” method, and extends it to the 3D, interactive world of Minecraft.**
You’ve mined for diamonds, crafted dozens of tools, and built all sorts of structures–but what if you could program robots to do all of that for you in a fraction of the time?
In *Coding with Minecraft®* , you’ll create a virtual robot army with Lua, a programming language used by professional game developers. Step-by-step coding projects will show you how to write programs that automatically dig mines, collect materials, craft items, and build anything that you can imagine. Along the way, you’ll explore key computer science concepts like data types, functions, variables, and more.
Learn how to:
\- Program robots that make smart decisions with flow control
\- Reuse code so that your robots can farm any crop you want, including wheat, sugar cane, and even cacti!
\- Program a factory that generates infinite building supplies
\- Design an algorithm for creating walls and buildings of any size
\- Code yourself a pickaxe-swinging robotic lumberjack!
\- Create a robot that digs mine shafts with stairs so you can explore safely
Bonus activities in each chapter will help you take your coding skills to the next level. By the end of the book, you’ll understand how powerful coding can be and have plenty of robots at your beck and call. **

Chosen of the Valkyries

Germany, 1985.
The Reich Council has fallen and the Reich is sundered in two, but the uneasy peace will not last long. To the east, Karl Holliston – now styling himself the Fuhrer of the Greater German Reich – is planning the conquest of Berlin and the destruction of the rebels, while to the west Germany’s former satellites are planning a bid for independence and the North Atlantic Alliance is uneasily considering just what will happen to the Reich’s vast arsenal of nuclear weapons.
As the civil war begins, as the Panzers begin their advance on Berlin, the rebels are forced to fight to save their revolution …
… Or watch helplessly as a jackboot stamps down on Germany, forever.
[Like my other self-published Kindle books, Chosen of the Valkyries is DRM-free. You may reformat it as you choose. There is a large sample of the text – and my other books – on my site: chrishanger.net. Try before you buy.]

Children of the Storm

It was hard for Sonya Carter to believe that she was only half an hour from civilization, for the feeling of isolation from the world on this tiny island in the Caribbean was almost complete. The people in the two houses on the island could have been cast adrift from reality, inhabiting a universe of their own. Sonya had come to Distingue to escape the dark days of her recent past; the offer of a job as tutor to the Dougherty children seemed heaven- sent. And for a time Distingue seemed to live up to the promise of its name–a place of elegance. But there was a darker force on the island, an insane power that sought to bring terror to the most innocent victims of all, the children. Someone was determined to murder them–and only Sonya stood in his way!

Everyone in town is suspicious, but things spiral out of control when FBI Agent Landon Michaels’ boss believes he can’t be objective where his girlfriend’s family is concerned and sends another agent to lead the investigation. The new agent is gung-ho, headstrong and making witchy enemies at every turn.
When the investigation turns to the past instead of the present, Aunt Tillie refuses to talk and a long held Hemlock Cove secret risks being exposed. Bodies start piling up as old grudges overlap with new clues and the Winchesters are caught in the crossfire.
Bay is determined to clear her great-aunt’s name but even she has her doubts when the victim’s ghost points a finger … directly at Aunt Tillie. It’s all hands on deck for an explosive showdown that proves some secrets are best left buried.
Bay just hopes she won’t end up buried, too.

But thanks to modern folding techniques, it’s possible to recapture the true charm of our feline companions. This book for origamists of all skill levels offers 20 original designs that range from a grinning Cheshire cat and a snoozing feline to a walking cat, a seated cat, a Halloween cat, and the smug cat that got the cream, as well as cats on an envelope, a bookmark, a greeting card, and other figures.
Along with step-by-step directions and diagrams, each model features a full-color image of the finished cat. Projects are rated according to difficulty, and a brief introductory chapter explains folding techniques and suggestions for how to choose the most appropriate origami paper. Cape May

**“Inside this mesmerizing tale of sexual desire and discovery, naive newlyweds Henry and Effie are honeymooning in Cape May, N.J., in 1957, tentatively navigating intimacy. Then they meet Clara and Max, hard-partying lovers who dazzle the innocent pair until they’ve lost more than their virginity. Cheek’s sensual first novel leaves you wanting more.”**
**– *PEOPLE***
**”Henry and Effie’s honeymoon is meant to be their introduction to the pleasures of the body, but in the company of Clara and her promiscuous cohort they lose all track of boundaries. A dozy, luxurious sense of enchantment comes over the story, until the rude awakening at its finale…. *Cape May* does something better than critique or satirize: It seduces.”**
**– *The Wall Street Journal***
***Cape May*** **is a raw, provocative portrayal of a young 1950s couple on the cusp of a sexual awakening, and the temptations that upturn their honeymoon and reshape their marriage.**
In this erotic and intimate debut novel, a naïve southern couple is exposed to a group of raucous, debauched urbanites. Arriving for their honeymoon in Cape May, New Jersey, during the off season, Henry and Effie are startled to find the beach town deserted. The abandoned homes and desolate beaches make them shy of each other, and, isolated in their new marriage, they decide to cut their trip short.
But before they leave, they encounter their glamorous, sensual neighbors and become swept up by their drama. Clara, a beautiful socialite who feels her youth slipping away; Max, a wealthy playboy and Clara’s lover; and Alma, Max’s aloof, mysterious, and evocative half-sister, to whom Henry is irresistibly drawn. Slowly, agonizingly, these deeply-flawed, profoundly human characters pull Henry and Effie out of themselves and expose them to a side of desire they never expected.
While they discover new truths in each other and in their marriage, the empty beach town becomes their playground. And as they sneak into the vacant summer homes, go sailing, walk naked under the stars, make love, and drink an enormous amount of gin, Henry and Effie slip from innocence into betrayal, with irrevocable consequences.
Seductive and moving, this is a novel about marriage, love, raw sexuality, and the ways in which desire and betrayal can reverberate endlessly throughout our lives.

Building RESTful Web Services With Spring 5

**Find out how to implement the REST architecture to build resilient software in Java with the help of the Spring 5.0 framework.**
#### Key Features
* Follow best practices and explore techniques such as clustering and caching to achieve a reactive, scalable web service.
* Leverage the Spring Framework to quickly implement RESTful endpoints.
* Learn to implement a client library for a RESTful web service using the Spring Framework along with the new front end framework.

#### Book Description
REST is an architectural style that tackles the challenges of building scalable web services. In today’s connected world, APIs have taken a central role on the web. APIs provide the fabric through which systems interact, and REST has become synonymous with APIs.The depth, breadth, and ease of use of Spring makes it one of the most attractive frameworks in the Java ecosystem. Marrying the two technologies is therefore a very natural choice. This book takes you through the design of RESTful web services and leverages the Spring Framework to implement these services. Starting from the basics of the philosophy behind REST, you’ll go through the steps of designing and implementing an enterprise-grade RESTful web service. Taking a practical approach, each chapter provides code samples that you can apply to your own circumstances. This second edition brings forth the power of the latest Spring 5.0 release, working with MVC built-in as well as the front end framework. It then goes beyond the use of Spring to explores approaches to tackle resilience, security, and scalability concerns. Improve performance of your applications with the new HTTP 2.0 standards. You’ll learn techniques to deal with security in Spring and discover how to implement unit and integration test strategies. Finally, the book ends by walking you through building a Java client for your RESTful web service, along with some scaling techniques using the new Spring Reactive libraries.
#### What you will learn
* Deep dive into the principles behind REST
* Expose CRUD operations through RESTful endpoints with the Spring Framework
* Devise response formats and error handling strategies, offering a consistent and flexible structure to simplify integration for service consumers
* Follow the best approaches for dealing with a service’s evolution while maintaining backward compatibility
* Understand techniques to secure web services
* Comply with the best ways to test RESTful web services, including tips for load testing
* Optimise and scale web services using techniques such as caching and clustering
