Fifth Avenue, 5 A.M.: Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and the Dawn of the Modern Woman

EDITORIAL REVIEW: Audrey Hepburn is an icon like no other, yet the image many of us have of Audrey—dainty, immaculate—is anything but true to life. Here, for the first time, Sam Wasson presents the woman behind the little black dress that rocked the nation in 1961. The first complete account of the making of *Breakfast at Tiffany’s*, *Fifth Avenue, 5 A.M.* reveals little-known facts about the cinema classic: Truman Capote desperately wanted Marilyn Monroe for the leading role; director Blake Edwards filmed multiple endings; Hepburn herself felt very conflicted about balancing the roles of mother and movie star. With a colorful cast of characters including Truman Capote, Edith Head, Givenchy, “Moon River” composer Henry Mancini, and, of course, Hepburn herself, Wasson immerses us in the America of the late fifties before Woodstock and birth control, when a not-so-virginal girl by the name of Holly Golightly raised eyebrows across the country, changing fashion, film, and sex for good. Indeed, cultural touchstones like *Sex and the City* owe a debt of gratitude to *Breakfast at Tiffany’s*. In this meticulously researched gem of a book, Wasson delivers us from the penthouses of the Upper East Side to the pools of Beverly Hills, presenting *Breakfast at Tiffany’s* as we have never seen it before—through the eyes of those who made it. Written with delicious prose and considerable wit, *Fifth Avenue, 5 A.M.* shines new light on a beloved film and its incomparable star.

The Fiery Cross

1771: the Colony of North Carolina stands in an uneasy balance, with the rich, colonial aristocracy on one side and the struggling pioneers of the backcountry on the other.

Between them stands Jamie Fraser, a man of honour, a man of worth. Exiled from his beloved Scotland, he is at last possessed of the land he has longed for. By his side his extraordinary wife, Claire, a woman out of time and out of place, blessed with the uneasy gift of the knowledge of what is to come. In the past, that knowledge has brought both danger and deliverance to Jamie and Claire. Now it could be a flickering torch that will light their way through the perilous years ahead – or might ignite a conflagration that will leave their lives in ashes.

The Fiery Cross is by turns poignant, page-turning, meticulous in its historical detail and searingly passionate.

Fevre Dream

**A THRILLING REINVENTION OF THE VAMPIRE NOVEL BY THE MASTER OF MODERN FANTASY, GEORGE R. R. MARTIN**
** **
Abner Marsh, a struggling riverboat captain, suspects that something’s amiss when he is approached by a wealthy aristocrat with a lucrative offer. The hauntingly pale, steely-eyed Joshua York doesn’t care that the icy winter of 1857 has wiped out all but one of Marsh’s dilapidated fleet; nor does he care that he won’t earn back his investment in a decade. York’s reasons for traversing the powerful Mississippi are to be none of Marsh’s concern—no matter how bizarre, arbitrary, or capricious York’s actions may prove. Not until the maiden voyage of *Fevre Dream *does Marsh realize that he has joined a mission both more sinister, and perhaps more noble, than his most fantastic nightmare—and humankind’s most impossible dream.

Ferromancer: Iron Souls, Book One

Solutions aren’t always black and white—sometimes they come in shades of iron gray.

Captain Bridget “Briar” Rose wants for nothing. Each day is a new adventure, living the life she loves, running cargo on the Ohio & Erie Canal. That is, until her cousin decides to sell the family boat to finance a new business venture. He wants to build locomotives for the railroad—the very industry that could put the entire canal system out of business.

Not one to give up without a fight, Briar does a little snooping into her cousin’s new business partner. When she gets a sneak peek at the locomotive plans, she suspects that the man is either a genius, or a ferromancer—one of the dreaded metal mages of Europe’s industrial revolution.

Determined to reveal her suspicions, Briar takes the plans and heads for the newspaper office in Columbus, stealing the family boat in the process. Kidnapping her cousin’s handsome business partner wasn’t part of the plan, but when he shows up, demanding the return of his property, she can’t let him go. After all, if Briar can prove that the railroad is using ferromancy, she could save more than her boat. She could save her way of life.

The Fermi Paradox

“The Fermi Paradox” is a standalone story set in the same universe as Brandon Overall’s first book, “Superhuman Nature”. The story takes place after events of the first book but follows the tale of a completely new cast of characters. Reading the first book is not necessary in order to fully enjoy this one!
Alan Turner is an experienced combat veteran of the Second Korean War. He wants only to spend his remaining days secluded in an Alaskan cabin, far away from reminders of his past. His peace and quiet come to an end when the planet is struck by an electromagnetic pulse and an alien spaceship is knocked out of the sky not far from his home.
Alan races to the crash site to investigate and stumbles across the first known alien lifeform, marking humanity’s first contact with alien life. However, he’s not the only one interested in this downed ship.
A covert government organization known only as the Administration also rushes to investigate the site of the crash. They have been tracking the activity of this alien race across thousands of years of human history. They are driven to understand the intentions of these uninvited visitors and, if necessary, eliminate the threat.
Alan quickly discovers that even though this stranded alien pilot has remarkable abilities, it can’t accomplish its mission without Alan’s help. Alan is forced to make an important decision: does he turn over this extraterrestrial lifeform to the Administration, or risk his own life to protect it?
As events unfold, the true nature of this alien race comes to light, and the truth that is revealed is more terrible than anyone could have imagined. A horrifying fate awaits the human race, and their only chance of survival hinges on whether or not they are willing to trust the words of this mysterious alien.

The Fenris Device

In a galactic culture that extends from quasi-Utopian worlds like New Alexandria to vermin-infested slums like Old Earth, the Star-Pilots that link the cosmos are the great heroes of the day, and Grainger has become a legend in his own lifetime. The atmosphere of Mormyr is so dense that the surface is unreachable, which made it the ideal place for the alien Gallacellans to hide an ancient spaceship. Now they want it back. Grainger refuses, but when the Hooded Swan answers a mayday call, Grainger and his crew are trapped by a madman, who forces them to pursue the salvage anyway. Success will mean Grainger’s freedom from Titus Charlot, owner of the Hooded Swan; failure will mean the death of the inhabitants of an entire planet. And then the Gallacellans appear Hooded Swan, Book Five.

The Fellowship of the Ring

The Fellowship of the Ring: Being the First Part of The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien
Part one of The Lord of the Rings, now featuring film art on the cover. In ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. In a sleepy village in the Shire, young Frodo Baggins finds himself faced with an immense task, as his elderly cousin Bilbo entrusts the Ring to his care. Frodo must leave his home and make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ring and foil the Dark Lord in his evil purpose.
Author Biography: J.R.R. Tolkien was born on January 3, 1892. After serving in the First World War, he embarked upon a distinguished career as a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford University. He is the renowned creator of Middle-earth and author of the great modern classic, The Hobbit, the prelude to his epic masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings. Other works by J.R.R. Tolkien include The Silmarillion. J.R.R. Tolkien died in 1973 at the age of 81.

Feet of Clay

EDITORIAL REVIEW: It’s murder in Discworld! — which ordinarily is no big deal. But what bothers Watch Commander Sir Sam Vimes is that the unusual deaths of three elderly Ankh-Morporkians do not bear the clean, efficient marks of the Assassins’ Guild. An apparent lack of any motive is also quite troubling. All Vimes has are some tracks of white clay and more of those bothersome “clue” things that only serve to muck up an investigation. The anger of a fearful populace is already being dangerously channeled toward the city’s small community of golems — the mindless, absurdly industrious creatures of baked clay who can occasionally be found toiling in the city’s factories. And certain highly placed personages are using the unrest as an excuse to resurrect a monarchy — which would be bad enough even if the “king” they were grooming wasn’t as empty-headed as your typical animated pottery.

Feature Engineering for Machine Learning: Principles and Techniques for Data Scientists

Feature engineering is a crucial step in the machine-learning pipeline, yet this topic is rarely examined on its own. With this practical book, you’ll learn techniques for extracting and transforming features—the numeric representations of raw data—into formats for machine-learning models. Each chapter guides you through a single data problem, such as how to represent text or image data. Together, these examples illustrate the main principles of feature engineering.
Rather than simply teach these principles, authors Alice Zheng and Amanda Casari focus on practical application with exercises throughout the book. The closing chapter brings everything together by tackling a real-world, structured dataset with several feature-engineering techniques. Python packages including numpy, Pandas, Scikit-learn, and Matplotlib are used in code examples.
You’ll examine:
* Feature engineering for numeric data: filtering, binning, scaling, log transforms, and power transforms
* Natural text techniques: bag-of-words, n-grams, and phrase detection
* Frequency-based filtering and feature scaling for eliminating uninformative features

### Sinossi
* Encoding techniques of categorical variables, including feature hashing and bin-counting
* Model-based feature engineering with principal component analysis
* The concept of model stacking, using k-means as a featurization technique
* Image feature extraction with manual and deep-learning techniques
