Last Stand on Talos Seven

Wizard Scouts are the greatest fighting force the galaxy has ever seen. When there’s planet-sized trouble, sometimes only a wizard scout will suffice.
After the citizens of Talos Seven discover a rich titanium vein on their planet, they think it will be a boon for all. That is, until the pirates show up. Soon the Talosians, young and old, are forced to work in the pit mine in return for the pirates’ protection.
After the murder of the town’s mayor, young Anna finally has enough. Scrounging together as many credits as she can find, she takes off in a battered survey ship to find help for her beleaguered planet. What she finds is Wizard Scout Trinity Delgado.
With time of the essence, Trinity gathers together five medically disabled wizard scouts to help her defend a planet from a vastly superior force of armored attack vehicles. To make matters worse, other forces are at play that threatens the entire galaxy. Caught between the pirates and an armada of the bat-like soldiers of the Crosoian Federation, Trinity and her ragtag band of mercenaries must somehow snatch victory from certain defeat in the face of impossible odds.
What else is new?

Last Scene Alive

In the first installment of the Aurora Teagarden series, Real Murders, the small town of Lawrenceton, Georgia, was beset by a series of horrific murders. Librarian Aurora “Roe” Teagarden teamed up with true crime writer Robin Crusoe to catch the killer, and the results of their investigation have gone down in Lawrenceton history.
Now Robin is back in town, set to begin filming the movie version of the terrible events of so many years ago. Of course he’s not alone-he brings with him a cast and crew the size of which nearly overwhelms the tiny excitement-starved town. Roe is disturbed to discover that the film’s crew includes her stepson, who despises her, as well as an actress set to play her in the film. Everyone in Lawrenceton suddenly goes movie crazy, mentally composing awards-acceptance speeches while prancing around the fringes of the set awaiting discovery.
Roe’s not so crazy about the whole thing…and neither is a secret, vicious murderer. When bodies start dropping, it’s up to Roe to reprise her role as amateur sleuth and stop the carnage before it gets out of hand. It’s no problem for the beloved small-town librarian in this wonderfully cozy installment in the adored Aurora Teagarden mystery series.

The Last Illusion

Irish immigrant and PI Molly Murphy is thrilled to have a ticket to the theater to see a trio of illusionists that are all the rage. Indeed, headlining is Harry Houdini, the most sensational of them all; he has just returned from entertaining European kings and queens for a brief run on Broadway.
But before Houdini can even take the stage, the opening act goes horribly wrong and to the crowd’s shock the illusionist saws into his assistant. In the aftermath, the stunned performer accuses Houdini of tampering with the equipment he keeps under lock and key. And he’s not the only one critical of “The King of Handcuffs.” Risking his life every night, Houdini has raised the stakes to such a perilous level that he’s putting lesser acts out of business.
With everyone on edge, Houdini’s wife hires Molly to be part investigator/part bodyguard, but how can she protect a man who literally risks his life every night? And how is she going to uncover whether these masters of illusion are simply up to their tricks or if there truly is something much more treacherous going on.
With sparkling wit, charming characters, and historic detail, multiple award winner Rhys Bowen brings early-twentieth-century New York City and the fantastic performers of the time vividly to life in *The Last Illusion*.

The Last Honest Woman

Abigail O’Hurley Rockwell was a desperate woman. Journalist Dylan Crosby was going to start digging up her past for the book he was writing about her infamous late husband. It was just research to him, but to her it was a painful reality that had to be kept under lock and key for the sake of her children. Abby would do anything to keep their world safe – no matter how compelling Dylan’s promises might be…” – back cover.

The Last Coyote

The Last Coyote (Harry Bosch Series #4) by Michael Connelly
Harry’s life is a mess. His new house has been condemned because of earthquake damage. His girlfriend has left him. He’s drinking too much. And he’s even had to turn in his badge: he attacked his commanding officer and is suspended indefinitely pending a psychiatric evaluation. At first Bosch resists the LAPD shrink, but finally he recognizes that something is troubling him, a force that may have shaped his entire life. In 1961, when Harry was twelve, his mother was brutally murdered. No one was ever even accused of the crime. Harry opens up the decades-old file on the case and is irresistibly drawn into a past he has always avoided. It’s clear that the case was fumbled. His mother was a prostitute, and even thirty years later the smell of a coverup is unmistakable. Someone powerful was able to keep the investigating officers away from key suspects. Even as he confronts his own shame about his mother, Harry relentlessly follows up the old evidence, seeking justice or at least understanding. Out of the broken pieces of the case he discerns a trail that leads upward, toward prominent people who lead public lives high in the Hollywood hills. And as he nears his answer, Harry finds that ancient passions don’t die. They cause new murders even today. The Last Coyote is that rarest of novels, a moral thriller, a breakneck-paced tale that opens up the heart’s most secret wounds. No one who reads it will remain unchanged or forget the passion of Harry Bosch. Before he can get back on the beat, Harry has to convinvce the LAPD psychiatrist — and more importantly, himself — that he’s emotionally up to it.

The Last Continent

EDITORIAL REVIEW: Something is amiss at Unseen Unversity, Ankh-Morpork’s most prestigious (i.e., only) institution of higher learning. **A professor is missing–but a search party is on the way!** A bevy of senior wizards will follow the trail wherever it leads–even to the other side of Discworld, where the Last Continent, Fourecks, is under construction. **Imagine a magical land** where rain is but a myth and the ordinary is strange and the past and present run side by side. **experience the terror** as you encounter a Mad Dwarf, the Peach Butt, and the dreaded Meat Pie Floater. **Feel the passion** as the denizens of the Last Continent learn what happens when rain falls and the rivers fill with water (it spoils regattas, for one thing). **Thrill to the promise* of next year’s regatta, in remote, rustic Didjabringabeeralong. It’ll be asolutely gujeroo (no worries).

Last Argument of Kings

Book Three of The First Law
The end is coming.
Logen Ninefingers might only have one more fight in him – but it’s going to be a big one. Battle rages across the North, the King of the Northmen still stands firm, and there’s only one man who can stop him. His oldest friend, and his oldest enemy. It’s past time for the Bloody-Nine to come home.
With too many masters and too little time, Superior Glokta is fighting a different kind of war. A secret struggle in which no-one is safe, and no-one can be trusted. His days with a sword are far behind him. It’s a good thing blackmail, threats and torture still work well enough.
Jezal dan Luthar has decided that winning glory is far too painful, and turned his back on soldiering for a simple life with the woman he loves. But love can be painful too, and glory has a nasty habit of creeping up on a man when he least expects it.
While the King of the Union lies on his deathbead, the peasants revolt and the nobles scramble to steal his crown. No-one believes that the shadow of war is falling across the very heart of the Union. The First of the Magi has a plan to save the world, as he always does. But there are risks. There is no risk more terrible, after all, than to break the First Law . . .
**Recensie(s)**

The star of the show is doubtlessly Inquisitor Glotka for simply being one of the most wonderfully bitter and cynical characters I’ve come across. With a very funny and clever internal monologue going on during every conversation he has, Glotka’s as miserable and nasty at the end as he was to start with and, especially in a heroic fantasy novel, it works perfectly — SF Crowsnest An admirably hard, fast and unpretentious read from debut author Joe Abercrombie. Packs a mean punch in the bloodthirsty mayhem and mystery departments. Crammed full of torture, vengeance and bad behaviour, it’s a lively tale of savagery vs. civilisation. The Blade Itself may not reinvent the wheel, but it does serve up a whole banquet of violent action and intrigue’ — SFX You’d never guess that The Blade Itself is Joe Abercrombie’s debut novel. He writes like a natural. There are great characters, sparky dialogue, an action-packed plot, and from the very first words and an opening scene that is literally a cliff-hanger, you know you are in for a cheeky, vivid, exhilarating ride — Starburst There’s a fat vein of cynicism and dark humour throughout. The action scenes are fast-paced and the violence takes its toll both mentally and physically. A great start to a long journey’ — Dreamwatch The Blade Itself is a page-turner powered by a combination of fast-paced action and juicy doses of cynicism. Perhaps more remarkable, however, is the way Abercrombie sets the scene — Edge Magazine Delightfully twisted and evil — The Guardian There is a gritty edge to his world and an awareness of the human cost of violence that is very contemporary — The Times Highly recommended – a funny, finely-wrought, terrifically energetic work of high fantasy. Seek it out — Joe Hill I might not end up marrying this book, but I’m certainly infatuated with it right at the moment. It’s delicious, the characters sharply drawn and their motivations believable, the clash of cultures (always particularly difficult for an author to pull off) believable as well. — Lilith Saintcrow
