Shadowed

“This is all that’s left?” Bill Jennings, Director of the Joint National Security Agency and Homeland Security Office glanced up at his assistant. Six names on a piece of official letterhead had been passed to the aging Director. Bill was two months away from retirement and the president and other high-ranking officials were already vetting candidates to fill his position.
Bill shook his head at the list of children still living. Another piece of paper resting under his hand listed the names of the dead. There were nearly seven hundred of those and he still wasn’t sure they’d gotten information on all the children involved. He worried about many other children listed as missing – had they been abducted? How could he explain these things to the president, let alone someone coming in to take over his job? Bill sighed heavily. “Where are they now?” he asked.
“These six,” Vince Jordan, Bill’s assistant, tapped the paper containing the names of the half-Elemaiyan children still living, “are relocated, but we’ve seen how unsuccessful that has been in the past. You know where the seventh one is, through Mr. Winkler.”
“Yes. I do know where the seventh one is,” Bill agreed.
“Do you think, sir,” Vince mused aloud, “that we might put these six,” he tapped the paper again, “where the seventh one is?”
Of the hundreds of Bright Elemaiyan children born to human parents, only seven remain. Six of those have been relocated, but the Dark Elemaiya are closing in to destroy them. The seventh, Ashe Evans, resides in Cloud Chief, Oklahoma. Government authorities, in an effort to save the relocated six, approach the residents of Cloud Chief seeking shelter for the children and their human families. Ashe must find a way to keep them safe as murders begin to pile up outside Cloud Chief’s protected boundaries.

Secrets of Good Design for Artists, Artisans and Crafters

Practical and aesthetically pleasing, this visual meditation on the constituents of good design considers all manner of construction, form, and ornamentation. It answers many questions about design choices, from basic to specific, with clear, concise, and practical directions. The book’s appeal lies chiefly in the integrity of its own design, consisting of hand-lettered text and pleasingly styled and proportioned illustrations.Author Burl N. Osburn addresses basic questions — What are the qualities of good design, and how does balance affect design? What is good proportion, and how is ornament used? — and explores design choices in a variety of expressions. Featured arts and crafts include the use of wrought iron, methods of cutting wood, the decoration of clay and leather, the basic textile structures, the nature of the tapestry weave and design of block-printed textile, the development of repeat pattern and the geometry of repeating ornament, and attaining typographic unity. Satantango

**At long last, twenty-five years after the Hungarian genius L aszlo Krasznahorkai burst onto the scene with his first novel, *Satantango* dances into English in a beautiful translation by George Szirtes.**
Already famous as the inspiration for the filmmaker Bela Tarr’s six-hour masterpiece, *Satantango* is proof, as the spellbinding, bleak, and hauntingly beautiful book has it, that ‘the devil has all the good times.’
The story of *Satantango* , spread over a couple of days of endless rain, focuses on the dozen remaining inhabitants of an unnamed isolated hamlet: failures stuck in the middle of nowhere. Schemes, crimes, infidelities, hopes of escape, and above all trust and its constant betrayal are Krasznahorkai’s meat. ‘At the center of *Satantango* ,’ George Szirtes has said, ‘is the eponymous drunken dance, referred to here sometimes as a tango and sometimes as a csardas. It takes place at the local inn where everyone is drunk. . . . Their world is rough and ready, lost somewhere between the comic and tragic, in one small insignificant corner of the cosmos. Theirs is the dance of death.’
‘You know,’ Mrs. Schmidt, a pivotal character, tipsily confides, ‘dance is my one weakness.’

RSPB Spotlight Sparrows

Sparrows are often considered familiar to the point of invisibility, but the recent steep decline in numbers of both native British species is a reminder that these unassuming chatterboxes deserve a little more attention.
Of all the true sparrow species found worldwide, only two occur in the British Isles. Globally, the story of the House Sparrow is one of dramatic expansion: from humble origins in the Middle East where they spread, along with agriculture, to become the most widely distributed bird on the planet. The smaller, more active Tree Sparrow has also spread extensively, following the domestication of rice rather than wheat, and both species have been heavily persecuted in recent years. In *Spotlight* *Sparrows* , Amy-Jane Beer examines the causes behind the decline of these familiar species, and explores their biology and life cycle, social behaviour, and the significant role that sparrows play in human culture, from Shakespeare and Edith Piaf to Captain Jack Sparrow.
The Spotlight series introduces readers to the lives and behaviour of our favourite animals with eye-catching colour photography and informative expert text.

Roma Eterna

The Roman Empire never fell. Riven by political ambition and internal dissent, thrown into turmoil by rebellion and civil war, it changed and adapted, and somehow it survived. The balance of power between Constantinopolis in the east and Roma in the west ebbed and flowed, but the Empire endured. And it continued to expand, encountering the New World while still dominating the old.
Robert Silverberg’s superbly accomplished and ambitious novel explores over fifteen hundred years of Roman history through the very human stories of some of those who lived it. The young soldier encountering the exoticism of the New World for the first time; the minor official exiled to Arabia, for some misdemeanour, whose meeting with a religious fanatic may have changed the course of history; the military hero seizing his destiny; the innocent British aristocrat witnessing at first hand the bloody destruction of the royal family, and the children who find the last emperor in a decaying house in an old wood are all vividly and memorably portrayed.

Riding the Unicorn

Released in the US for the first time, this is Paul Kearney’s stunning novel of second chances in a world of battle and danger.
John Willoughby is being pulled between worlds. Or he is going mad, ‘riding the unicorn’ as his prison officer colleagues would say. It’s clear to Willoughby it must be the latter. Disappearing in the middle of his prison shift from among convicts, appearing in a makeshift medieval encampment for minutes before tumbling back to the real world, Willoughby believes his mind is simply breaking apart.
He finds no solace at home, with a wife who has grown to dislike him and a daughter who can barely hide her disgust. He’s realised he isn’t worth anyone’s time, barely even his own, and falls into drinking and violence guaranteed to bring about his downfall. Except in this other world, in this winter land of first-settlers he is a man with a purpose, a man upon whom others must rely. Persuaded to kill a King so as to save a people, Willoughby finds that in another world, with a second chance he may be the kind of man he had always wanted to be after all. **

Reuse Methodology Manual for System-On-A-Chip Designs

Reuse Methodology Manual for System-on-a-Chip Designs, Third Edition outlines a set of best practices for creating reusable designs for use in an SoC design methodology. These practices are based on the authors’ experience in developing reusable designs, as well as the experience of design teams in many companies around the world. Silicon and tool technologies move so quickly that many of the details of design-for-reuse will undoubtedly continue to evolve over time. But the fundamental aspects of the methodology described in this book have become widely adopted and are likely to form the foundation of chip design for some time to come. Development methodology necessarily differs between system designers and processor designers, as well as between DSP developers and chipset developers. However, there is a common set of problems facing everyone who is designing complex chips. In response to these problems, design teams have adopted a block-based design approach that emphasizes design reuse. Reusing macros (sometimes called “cores”) that have already been designed and verified helps to address all of the problems above. However, in adopting reuse-based design, design teams have run into a significant problem. Reusing blocks that have not been explicitly designed for reuse has often provided little or no benefit to the team. The effort to integrate a pre-existing block into new designs can become prohibitively high, if the block does not provide the right views, the right documentation, and the right functionality. From this experience, design teams have realized that reuse-based design requires an explicit methodology for developing reusable macros that are easy to integrate into SoC designs. This manual focuses on describing these techniques. Features of the Third Edition: Up to date; State of the art; Reuse as a solution for circuit designers; A chronicle of “best practices”; All chapters updated and revised; Generic guidelines – non tool specific; Emphasis on hard IP and physical design.

  • Psychology: A Crash Course

The way humans think and behave is endlessly fascinating and often surprising. Professional psychologists spend their working lives analyzing individuals’ mental processes and responses. Their subject is a science, but their practice and approach are governed by ethics and morality. We may all consider ourselves to be incidental psychologists in our daily interactions, confident of our ability to judge character, read body language, or to get to know someone, only to find ourselves confounded by seemingly unpredictable actions. Why do entirely good people sometimes do bad things? Is personality inherited or learned? Is there really such a thing as “being normal”? Psychology: A Crash Course looks at how these and many other questions have exercised the minds of those leading the way in psychology for more than 100 years. It’s a story of bold thinking, ingenious experiments, and sometimes startling conclusions that will make you stop and think.
