Lost Hope

It all started in the usual manner. Vicky fondling slimy beastie tentacles, me shouting at her, everything going wrong, us eventually getting away, even getting paid. But our new client, bored with his life, decided he wanted in on some wizard action. What better way to do that than summon the Hangman?
Before I could say, ”Hey, don’t touch that,” everything came crashing down and being chased by an immortal dude in dusty jeans and surprisingly boxfresh footwear became just one problem among many.
It had been a bad year and I was in a funk, so I really couldn’t be arsed with any of it. Until it involved family and friends.
So, yeah, here we are again, but all hope is lost, and I’m more confused than a wizard at a barber’s, but that’s life, I guess.
Hi, I’m Arthur ”The Hat” Salzman. Gangster. Wizard. Somewhat suicidal.

The Lost Colony

Ten thousand years ago, humans and fairies fought a great battle for the magical island of Ireland. When it became clear to the fairy families that they could never win, they decided to move their civilization underground and keep themselves hidden from the humans. All the fairy families agreed on this, except the 8th family, the demons. The demons planned to lift their small island out of time until they had regrouped and were ready to wage war on the humans once more. However the time spell went wrong, and the island of Hybras was catapulted into Limbo, where it has remained for ten thousand years. Now, the tainted time spell is deteriorating and demons are being sucked back into the present space and time. The fairy Council is naturally concerned about this and is monitoring any materializations. When the spell’s deterioration accelerates, the materializations become unpredictable. Even the fairy scientists cannot figure out where the next demon will pop up. But someone can. Artemis Fowl, teenage criminal mastermind has solved temporal equations that no normal human should be intelligent enough to understand. So when a confused and frightened demon pops up in a Sicilian theatre, Artemis Fowl is there to meet him. Unfortunately, he is not the only one. A second, mysterious party has also solved the temporal equations, and has managed to abduct the demon before Artemis can secure him. This is a disaster for the fairy people, as this demon was no ordinary fairy. He was the last demon warlock, the one who held the key to the survival of the entire demon race.It is up to Artemis and his old comrade, Captain Holly Short, to track down the missing demon and rescue him, before the time spell dissolves completely and the lost demon colony returns violently to Earth.

Lost

EDITORIAL REVIEW: Winifred Rudge, a bemused writer struggling to get beyond the runaway success of her mass-market astrology book, travels to London to jump-start her new novel about a woman who is being haunted by the ghost of Jack the Ripper. Upon her arrival, she finds that her stepcousin and old friend John Comestor has disappeared, and a ghostly presence seems to have taken over his home. Is the spirit Winnie’s great-great-grandfather, who, family legend claims, was Charles Dickens’s childhood inspiration for Ebenezer Scrooge? Could it be the ghostly remains of Jack the Ripper? Or a phantasm derived from a more arcane and insidious origin? Winnie begins to investigate and finds herself the unwilling audience for a drama of specters and shades — some from her family’s peculiar history and some from her own unvanquished past. In the spirit of A. S. Byatt’s *Possession,* with dark echoing overtones of *A Christmas Carol,* *Lost* presents a rich fictional world that will enrapture its readers.

The Lord of the Rings

‘THE LORD OF THE RINGS’, J. R. R. Tolkein Illustrated by Alan Lee ‘Three Rings for the Eleven-kings under the sky, Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone Nine for the Mortal Men doomed to die, One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne In the Land of Mordor where the shadows lie. One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.’ In ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout the Middle-earth still it remained lost to him. After many ages it fell, by chance, into the hands of the hobbit, Bilbo Baggins. From his fastness in the Dark Tower of Mordor, Sauron’s power spread far and wide. He gathered all the Great Rings to him, but ever searched far and wide for the One Ring that would complete his dominion. On his eleventy-first birthday, Bilbo disappeared, bequeathing to his younger cousin, Frodo, the Ruling Ring, and a perilous quest: to journey across Middle-earth, deep into the shadow of the Dark Lord and destroy the Ring by casting it into the Cracks of Doom. ‘THE LORD OF THE RINGS’ tells of the great quest undertaken by Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring: Gandalf the wizard, Merry, Pippin and Sam, Gimli the Dwarf, Legolas the Elf, Boromir of Gondor, and a tall, mysterious stranger called Strider. ‘THE LORD OF THE RINGS’ was first published in three volumes between 1954 and 1955, to great acclaim: “One of the most remarkable works of literature in our, or any, time.” BERNARD LEVIN “No fiction I have read in the last five years has given me more joy” W. H. AUDEN “Like lightning from a clear sky ! heroic romance, gorgeous, eloquent and unashamed.” C. S. LEWIS “The world is divided into those who have read ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of The Rings’ and those who are going to read them.” ‘THE SUNDAY TIMES’ Alan Lee was born in Middlesex in 1947.He attended the Ealing School of Art, specialising in illustration, and has illustrated a wide range of books including ‘Faeries’ (with Brian Froud), ‘The Mabinogion, Castles’ and ‘Merlin Dreams.’ He also worked on the film ‘Erik the Viking.’ Tolkien’s work has inspired him ever since reading ‘The Lord of the Rings’ at an early age. Lord of the Flies

SUMMARY: William Golding’s classic tale about a group of English schoolboys who are plane-wrecked on a deserted island is just as chilling and relevant today as when it was first published in 1954. At first, the stranded boys cooperate, attempting to gather food, make shelters, and maintain signal fires. Overseeing their efforts are Ralph, “the boy with fair hair,” and Piggy, Ralph’s chubby, wisdom-dispensing sidekick whose thick spectacles come in handy for lighting fires. Although Ralph tries to impose order and delegate responsibility, there are many in their number who would rather swim, play, or hunt the island’s wild pig population. Soon Ralph’s rules are being ignored or challenged outright. His fiercest antagonist is Jack, the redheaded leader of the pig hunters, who manages to lure away many of the boys to join his band of painted savages. The situation deteriorates as the trappings of civilization continue to fall away, until Ralph discovers that instead of being hunters, he and Piggy have become the hunted: “He forgot his words, his hunger and thirst, and became fear; hopeless fear on flying feet.” Golding’s gripping novel explores the boundary between human reason and animal instinct, all on the brutal playing field of adolescent competition. –Jennifer Hubert
