Clutch of Constables

A classic Ngaio Marsh novel which features blood-curdling murders in the confines of a riverboat, the Zodiac, cruising through Constable country. ‘He looks upon the murders that he did in fact perform as tiresome and regrettable necessities,’ reflected Chief Superintendent Roderick Alleyn on the international crook known as the Jampot’. But it was Alleyn’s wife Troy who knew the Jampot’ best: she had shared close quarters with him on the tiny pleasure steamer Zodiac on a cruise along the peaceful rivers of Constable country’. And it was she who knew something was badly wrong even before Alleyn was called in to solve the two murders on board…

The Closer

**The greatest relief pitcher of all time shares his extraordinary story of survival, love, and baseball.**
Mariano Rivera, the man who intimidated thousands of batters merely by opening a bullpen door, began his incredible journey as the son of a poor Panamanian fisherman. When first scouted by the Yankees, he didn’t even own his own glove. He thought he might make a good mechanic. When discovered, he had never flown in an airplane, had never heard of Babe Ruth, spoke no English, and couldn’t imagine Tampa, the city where he was headed to begin a career that would become one of baseball’s most iconic. What he did know: that he loved his family and his then girlfriend, Clara, that he could trust in the Lord to guide him, and that he could throw a baseball exactly where he wanted to, every time.
With astonishing candor, Rivera tells the story of the championships, the bosses (including The Boss), the rivalries, and the struggles of being a Latino baseball player in the United States and of maintaining Christian values in professional athletics. The thirteen-time All-Star discusses his drive to win; the secrets behind his legendary composure; the story of how he discovered his cut fastball; the untold, pitch-by-pitch account of the ninth inning of Game 7 in the 2001 World Series; and why the lowest moment of his career became one of his greatest blessings.
In *The Closer,* Rivera takes readers into the Yankee clubhouse, where his teammates are his brothers. But he also takes us on that jog from the bullpen to the mound, where the game — or the season — rests squarely on his shoulders. We come to understand the laserlike focus that is his hallmark, and how his faith and his family kept his feet firmly on the pitching rubber. Many of the tools he used so consistently and gracefully came from what was inside him for a very long time — his deep passion for life; his enduring commitment to Clara, whom he met in kindergarten; and his innate sense for getting out of a jam.
When Rivera retired, the whole world watched — and cheered. In *The Closer,* we come to an even greater appreciation of a legend built from the ground up.

Edited by Andrew Biswell With a Foreword by Martin Amis
**’It is a horrorshow story …’**
Fifteen-year-old Alex likes lashings of ultraviolence. He and his gang of friends rob, kill and rape their way through a nightmarish future, until the State puts a stop to his riotous excesses. But what will his re-education mean?
A dystopian horror, a black comedy, an exploration of choice, *A Clockwork Orange* is also a work of exuberant invention which created a new language for its characters. This critical edition restores the text of the novel as Anthony Burgess originally wrote it, and includes a glossary of the teen slang ‘Nadsat’, explanatory notes, pages from the original typescript, interviews, articles and reviews, shedding light on the enduring fascination of the novel’s ‘sweet and juicy criminality’.
Anthony Burgess was born in Manchester in 1917 and educated at Xaverian College and Manchester University. He spent six years in the British Army before becoming a schoolmaster and colonial education officer in Malaya and Brunei. After the success of his *Malayan Trilogy*, he became a full-time writer in 1959. His books have been published all over the world, and they include *The Complete Enderby*, *Nothing Like the Sun*, *Napoleon Symphony*, *Tremor of Intent*, *Earthly Powers *and *A Dead Man in Deptford*. Anthony Burgess died in London in 1993.
Andrew Biswell is the Professor of Modern Literature at Manchester Metropolitan University and the Director of the International Anthony Burgess Foundation. His publications include a biography, *The Real Life of Anthony Burgess*, which won the Portico Prize in 2006. He is currently editing the letters and short stories of Anthony Burgess.

Cloak of War

The day Karl Jager graduated from university with a degree in Spaceship Command he expected a cushy job flying a freighter. He expected the biggest decision to be which whisky to drink. He expected the biggest threat to be the redhead in the orbital bar.
Instead he was drafted and sent to the frontlines as a junior officer.
With the 6th Fleet on the ropes, he finds himself battle promoted onto a little missile frigate that’s more missile than frigate. But as his career begins he learns that command isn’t what they teach you in college but what you learn in the hard vacuum of space.
As Karl loses his first major fleet engagement he’s adrift on a dying hulk with his only hope for the future to be a half mad Captain who might be his greatest mentor or his worst enemy.
Maybe both.

Classical Mechanics

Classical Mechanics by Matthew J. Benacquista, Joseph D. Romano
This textbook provides an introduction to classical mechanics at a level intermediate between the typical undergraduate and advanced graduate level. This text describes the background and tools for use in the fields of modern physics, such as quantum mechanics, astrophysics, particle physics, and relativity. Students who have had basic undergraduate classical mechanics or who have a good understanding of the mathematical methods of physics will benefit from this book.

Classical Field Theory

The book describes Maxwell’s equations first in their integral, directly testable form, then moves on to their local formulation. The first two chapters cover all essential properties of Maxwell’s equations, including their symmetries and their covariance in a modern notation. Chapter 3 is devoted to Maxwell theory as a classical field theory and to solutions of the wave equation. Chapter 4 deals with important applications of Maxwell theory. It includes topical subjects such as metamaterials with negative refraction index and solutions of Helmholtz’ equation in paraxial approximation relevant for the description of laser beams.

Chapter 5 describes non-Abelian gauge theories from a classical, geometric point of view, in analogy to Maxwell theory as a prototype, and culminates in an application to the U(2) theory relevant for electroweak interactions. The last chapter 6 gives a concise summary of semi-Riemannian geometry as the framework for the classical field theory of gravitation. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the Schwarzschild solution of Einstein’s equations and the classical tests of general relativity (perihelion precession of Mercury, and light deflection by the sun).

Clarkson on Cars

SUMMARY: Jeremy Clarkson is the second-best motoring writer in Britain. For twenty years, he’s been driving cars, writing about them and occasionally voicing his opinions about them on the BBC’s Top Gear. No one in the business is taller. Here, he’s collected his best car columns and stories in which he waxes lyrical on topics as useful and diverse as: bull; the perils of bicycle ownership bull; why Australians – not Brits – need bull bars bull; why soon only geriatrics will be driving BMW’s bull; the difficulty of deciding on the best car for your wedding bull; why Jesus’s dad would have owned a Nissan Bluebird bull; and why it is bus lanes that cause traffic jams Irreverent, damn funny and offensive to almost everyone, this is writing with its foot to the floor, the brake lines cut and the speed limit smashed to smithereens. Sit back and enjoy the ride.
