One of Edith Wharton’s few works of fiction that takes place outside of an urban, upper-class setting, *Ethan Frome* draws upon the bleak, barren landscape of rural New England. A poor farmer, Ethan finds himself stuck in a miserable marriage to Zeenie, a sickly, tyrannical woman, until he falls in love with her visiting cousin, the vivacious Mattie Silver. As Mattie is forced to leave his household, Frome steals one last afternoon with her—one that culminates in a ruinous sled ride with unspeakably tragic results.
Unhappily married herself, **Edith Wharton** projected her dark views of love onto people far removed from her social class in *Ethan Frome*. Her sensitivity to natural beauty and human psychology, however, make this slim novel a convincing and compelling portrait of rural life. A powerful tale of passion and loss—and the wretched consequences thereof—*Ethan Frome* is one of American literatures great tragic love stories.
Also included in this volume are four of Edith Wharton’s finest short stories: “The Pretext,” “Afterward,” “The Legend,” and “Xingu.”
**Kent P. Ljungquist**, Professor of English at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, is the author of *The Grand and the Fair: Poe’s Landscape Aesthetics and Pictorial Techniques*, co-editor of the SUNY Press edition of James Fenimore Cooper’s *The Deerslayer*, and editor of several reference works of American fiction.

Eternal Journey

Eternal Journey (Rogue Angel Series #17) by Alex Archer
After shooting an episode of *Chasing History’s Monsters *at a dig in Australia, Annja Creed is left feeling mildly unimpressed. The artifacts being uncovered are considered fringe by experts who doubt their authenticity. Annja is disappointed by the general lack of mystery involved. But her boredom is quickly replaced with fear when all that’s left of her cameraman is a drop of blood on his hotel-room carpet.
As she looks for her friend, Annja narrowly escapes an attack by gunmen. She realizes her cameraman must have captured the image of something so valuable that someone would kill them for just having dared look at it. When it becomes clear that everyone on the dig is at risk, Annja begins to think they’re in danger not because of what they saw, but *who….*

Etched in Sand

Regina’s Calcaterra memoir, Etched in Sand, is an inspiring and triumphant coming-of-age story of tenacity and hope.

Regina Calcaterra is a successful lawyer, New York State official, and activist. Her painful early life, however, was quite different. Regina and her four siblings survived an abusive and painful childhood only to find themselves faced with the challenges of the foster-care system and intermittent homelessness in the shadows of Manhattan and the Hamptons.

A true-life rags-to-riches story, Etched in Sand chronicles Regina’s rising above her past, while fighting to keep her brother and three sisters together through it all.

Beautifully written, with heartbreaking honesty, Etched in Sand is an unforgettable reminder that regardless of social status, the American Dream is still within reach for those who have the desire and the determination to succeed.

The Essential Writings of Machiavelli

###
The Essential Writings of Machiavelli by Niccolo Machiavelli
FINALIST—2008 PEN TRANSLATION PRIZE
In *The Essential Writings of Machiavelli,* Peter Constantine has assembled a comprehensive collection that shows the true depth and breadth of a great Renaissance thinker. Refreshingly accessible, these superb new translations are faithful to Machiavelli’s original, beautifully crafted writings.
The volume features essays that appear in English for the first time, such as “A Caution to the Medici” and “The Persecution of Africa.” Also included are complete versions of the political treatise, *The Prince*, the comic satire *The Mandrake*, *The Life of Castruccio Castracani*, and the classic story “Belfagor”, along with selections from *The Discourses, The Art of War,* and *Florentine Histories*. Augmented with useful features–vital and concise annotations and cross-references–this unique compendium is certain to become the standard one-volume reference to this influential, versatile, and ever timely writer.
“Machiavelli’s stress on political necessity rather than moral perfection helped inspire the Renaissance by renewing links with Thucydides and other classical thinkers. This new collection provides deeper insight into Machiavelli’s personality as a writer, thus broadening our understanding of him.”
–Robert D. Kaplan, author of W*arrior Politics: Why Leadership Demands a Pagan Ethos *
“Constantine’s selection is not only intelligent; his translations are astonishingly good. Thoughtfully introduced by Albert Russell Ascoli, this edition belongs in everyone’s library.”
–John Jeffries Martin, professor and chair, department of history, Trinity University
“If one were to assign a single edition of Machiavelli’s works, this most certainly would be it.”
–John P. McCormick, professor, department of political science, University of Chicago

Creator of the modern detective story, innovative architect of the horror genre, and a poet of extraordinary musicality, Edgar Allan Poe remains one of America’s most popular and influential writers. His tales and poems brim with psychological depth, almost painful intensity, and unexpected—and surprisingly modern—flashes of dark humor and irony. This anthology offers an exceptionally generous selection of Poe’s short stories. It includes his famed masterpieces, such as “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” and “The Purloined Letter,” featuring Poe’s great detective, Dupin; his insightful studies of madness “The Black Cat” and “The Tell-Tale Heart”; “The Gold-Bug,” his delightful exercise in “code-breaking”; and important but lesser-known tales, such as “Bon-Bon,” “The Assignation,” and “King Pest.” Also included are some of Poe’s most beloved poems, haunting lyrics of love and loss, such as “Annabel Lee,” nightmare phantasmagories such as “The Raven,” and his grand experiment in translating sound into words, “The Bells.” **Benjamin F. Fisher**, Professor of English, University of Mississippi, is a longtime enthusiast of the works of Poe. He has published books, articles, and notes about Poe, and in American, Victorian, and Gothic studies, and serves on editorial boards for several professional journals. He has also been acclaimed for outstanding teaching.

The Erotic Potential of My Wife

Having collected, among other things, cocktail sticks, electoral campaign badges, paintings of moored ships, rabbits’ feet, noises at five in the morning, Croatian maxims, staircase ornaments, the first pages of novels, the labels on melons, birds’ eggs, moments with you, hangmen’s nooses, Hector falls in love. It’s the way she washes windows that does it for him. And so begins his new infatuation, a collection (and recollection) of beautifully observed moments spent observing his wife’s every move. ‘The story of a kleptomaniac whose desire to rid himself of his mania drives him to extraordinary lengths. Funny, poignant and, in places, unexpectedly romantic. An absolute must-read.’ Independent ‘Absurd, funny, eccentric… this little world has seduced criti, filmmakers and an ever-larger public.’ Le Monde ‘A book worthy of Woody Allen.’ Glamour ‘David Foenkinos is in a league of his own. If we had to find his counterparts on the world stage, they would be Philip Roth and Thomas Pynchon.’ Elle ‘Read it, it’s hilarious!’ Le Parisien

The Eridani Convergence

Third book in the Carson & Roberts series, *The Eridani Covergence* picks up where *The Reticuli Deception* left off, with a callback to events of *Alpha Centauri: Sawyers World*. The Velkaryan ship *Carcharodon* finds itself in deep space. They divert toward 82 Eridani, a star with a settled planet, Tanith, not far off their course home. Star pilot Jaqueline “Jackie” Roberts just wants to run a little freight for a while and head home to Tau Ceti. But Ducayne, whom she owes for repairs to her ship, the *Sophie*, has other plans. He needs her to continue on to 82 Eridani to pick something up from one of his agents. Back at Alpha Centauri, archeologist Hannibal Carson has a near-death experience after a run-in with the Velkaryans. The mysterious Ducayne suggests he leave town — in fact the whole star system — for a while, and sends him to 82 Eridani to examine the object Roberts is retrieving. Carson, Roberts, and the Velkaryans aren’t the only ones headed to Tanith. There are aliens involved, in more ways than one, and Carson & Roberts are in for some surprises. Meanwhile, the Velkaryans on both Earth and the settled planets are intent on gaining their own advantage, both political and — if Ducayne’s people are reading the signs right — military.
