The Depths of War

Epic Space Opera on a massive scale.
Sarah Dayson has done everything she can just to keep herself and her crews alive. The Seventh Fleet is battered, down in numbers, and longing for a chance to come out on top for a change. Sarah, in alliance with the adepts of Refuge, thinks she finally has answers that will give her the upper hand against the enemies that threaten everything she cares about.
The adepts, able to function as one mind through the nexus of power that is Emille Sur’batti, can bring almost unthinkable power to the battles that wrack the galaxy. Sarah needs to build up a defense for Refuge, both to protect her people and the natives from attack by the Hive now that the Hive have a general idea where she’s located. She needs ships and crews, so she heads back to the galaxy for both.
As usual, that doesn’t turn out as expected when she finds yet another enemy on the field of battle.
Author Note: This is a serial set of novels. I recommend reading them in order as each builds on those that came before.

Depraved

Welcome to Hopkins Bend, the remote little Tennessee town where the backwoods inhabitants are cannibals and the local law operates a sex-trafficking ring. Unlucky travelers are frequently ensnared in the town’s sinister web. Some are held captive and tortured while others face even more gruesome fates. And beneath it all is the town’s darkest secret, the curse of the depraved and mutated Kincher clan.

Demons Don’t Dream

Drawn into Xanth by a harmless-looking computer game, two young people find themselves competing for a precious prize: Dug, who is beguiled by a beautiful serpent-princess, and Kim, who discovers her favorite fantasy realm has suddenly become frighteningly real.
In a desperate race against time, Dug and Kim battle their way across the wondrous, perilous land of Xanth, testing their courage against dozens of fearsome obstacles (and their wits against a host of outrageous puns!) But when treachery, danger, and deceit place Xanth itself in peril, Dug and Kim learn that some things are more important than winning or losing.
A breathtaking, madcap quest filled with fearsome monsters and far-fetched fun, *Demons Don’t Dream *is vintage Xanth, an unforgettable escapade from fantasy’s most imaginative storyteller.

Demon’s Kiss

Dark rituals. Power hungry demon-bloods. A witch barely holding it together.
Someone is killing the Hollows in New Orleans. After freeing the city from the yoke of Remy, the immortal, Madison and her coven start building a new social system based on freedom and democracy. But years of relying on the protection offered by a dictator has made the witches soft. Now their sacred spaces are under attack, and dangerous entities are slipping into the city.
As Madison investigates further, she finds a group of imps responsible for the draining and destruction of a Hollow, and foils their plans to continue pillaging. But this is only the beginning. When a group of demon-bloods spill into town, hell-bent on taking what they want and answering to no-one, the witches of New Orleans have to scramble just to react. Throw a tall, abrasive, new distraction hiding a dark secret into the mix, and this witch has her hands full.
Every decision Madison makes could lead to catastrophe, and with so many lives hanging in the balance, she can’t afford to make any mistakes. But without Jean Luc and Eliza by her side, she just might.

Demon’s King

“Reah, we have good information on Zellar.” That had me jerking my head up to stare at Lendill. Zellar. Just the sound of that name had every member of the ASD seething. Zellar—the rogue warlock who left drained planet cores in his wake. For years, he only worked on worlds outside the Alliance—the ASD had gotten too close to him on too many occasions. Burned him a few times—Ry had almost gotten him once, but Zellar had used the very last of a planet’s power and escaped. Ry always insisted that he’d wounded Zellar, though. I thought he could be right—we hadn’t heard anything from the murdering bastard in two years.
While battling personal grief, Reah is sent after Zellar, who has become one of the worst enemies the Alliance has ever faced. While determined to take down the rogue warlock, Reah learns that Zellar has trained other rogues to follow in his footsteps. Forced to work with the unlikeliest of allies, she pursues Zellar’s trained rogues in and outside the Alliance.

Demon Song

In a world where bloodthirsty vampires roam the night and street corner psychics have real powers, bodyguard Celia Graves always thought she was an ordinary human—but that was never true. By ancestry, she’s half-Siren. A vicious vampire attack has turned her into a creature who finds sunlight painful and must take all her food in liquid form—but who still possesses a human heart, mind, and soul.

Her bodyguard business is booming: who wouldn’t want to be protected by a sexy woman who is half-vampire, half-Siren princess, and a crack shot? Unfortunately, it looks like Celia may have little time to enjoy her newfound fame . . .

A rift is opening between the demonic dimension and our own, threatening to set hell’s denizens free (including the demon personally bent on destroying Celia). Celia’s recent troubles may have given her the unique combination of abilities needed to close the rift. But to overcome a death curse which nearly guarantees her failure, she’ll need to join forces with people she no longer trusts . . . and put people she cares about directly in harm’s way.
Kirkus Reviews calls Cat Adam’s Demon Song ”A warmly involving, action-packed yarn” and Publishers Weekly says the Blood Singer series ”just keeps getting better”!

Demon Lost

“Reah, this is Commander Aris.” Bel moved aside once we were inside the spacious office, and I received my first look at the outpost Commander. He stared at me for moments as I stood before him. I was so frightened, I was afraid I’d burst into tears. Aris was a lion of a man with thick, shoulder-length dark-gold hair, swept back from his forehead. He didn’t stand as his rank dictated, otherwise I think he would have dwarfed Bel, whom I thought was quite tall. The Commander’s shoulders were broader, too and I imagined that he’d gained his rank by working for it.
“Reah, how did those two miscreants bring you here when you were underage?” Commander Aris asked me after moments of silence. He sounded as if he’d just gotten his voice back.
“They found me and told me I should come with them,” I hung my head. I nearly jumped when I imagined that I heard a voice inside my head. I’m sure it was my fear – giving me hallucinations when there was nothing there. , the voice said. I drew a shaky breath and managed to put it out of my mind. The voice didn’t come again.

The Demolished Man

Winner of the First Hugo Award. #14 in the Millennium SF Masterworks series, a library of the finest science fiction ever written. “Bester’s two superb books have stood the test of time. For nearly sixty years they’ve held their place on everybody’s list of the ten greatest sf novels” -Robert Silverberg “One of the all-time classics of science fiction.”-Isaac Asimov “Alfred Bester wrote with the pedal to the floor and the headlights on full beam. His work combined erudition with an unparalleled imaginative inventiveness. Bester was writing cyberpunk while William Gibson was still running around zapping the other kids at school with a toy raygun.”-James Lovegrove In a world policed by telepaths, Ben Reich plans to commit a crime that hasn’t been heard of in 70 years: murder. That’s the only option left for Reich, whose company is losing a 10-year death struggle with rival D’Courtney Enterprises. Terrorized in his dreams by The Man With No Face and driven to the edge after D’Courtney refuses a merger offer, Reich murders his rival and bribes a high-ranking telepath to help him cover his tracks. But while police prefect Lincoln Powell knows Reich is guilty, his telepath’s knowledge is a far cry from admissible evidence.

Democracy Incorporated

Democracy is struggling in America–by now this statement is almost cliche. But what if the country is no longer a democracy at all? In Democracy Incorporated, Sheldon Wolin considers the unthinkable: has America unwittingly morphed into a new and strange kind of political hybrid, one where economic and state powers are conjoined and virtually unbridled? Can the nation check its descent into what the author terms inverted totalitarianism ? Wolin portrays a country where citizens are politically uninterested and submissive–and where elites are eager to keep them that way. At best the nation has become a managed democracy where the public is shepherded, not sovereign. At worst it is a place where corporate power no longer answers to state controls. Wolin makes clear that today’s America is in no way morally or politically comparable to totalitarian states like Nazi Germany, yet he warns that unchecked economic power risks verging on total power and has its own unnerving pathologies. Wolin examines the myths and mythmaking that justify today’s politics, the quest for an ever-expanding economy, and the perverse attractions of an endless war on terror. He argues passionately that democracy’s best hope lies in citizens themselves learning anew to exercise power at the local level. Democracy Incorporated is one of the most worrying diagnoses of America’s political ills to emerge in decades. It is sure to be a lightning rod for political debate for years to come. Now with a new introduction by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Chris Hedges, Democracy Incorporated remains an essential work for understanding the state of democracy in America.
