Transfer of Power

Transfer of Power (Mitch Rapp Series #1) by Vince Flynn
**#1 *New York Times* bestselling author of *American Assassin*—now a major motion picture**
**What if America’s most powerful leader was also its prime target?**
Vince Flynn’s shattering thriller, *Term Limits,* soared onto national bestseller lists and marked the emergence of a new master of political fiction in the same league as Tom Clancy. In *USA Today,* Larry King called *Term Limits* “a page-turning read,” while critics and readers nationwide praised its riveting premise of Washington under siege — a scenario made chillingly real by this superb storyteller.
Now, Flynn infiltrates America’s power structure at its very core, in a new novel that places the president of the United States in the direct line of terrorist fire.
On a busy Washington morning, amid the shuffle of tourists and the brisk rush of government officials, the stately calm of the White House is shattered in a hail of gunfire. A group of terrorists has descended on the Executive Mansion, and gained access by means of a violent massacre that has left dozens of innocent bystanders murdered. Through the quick actions of the Secret Service, the president is evacuated to his underground bunker, but not before almost one hundred hostages are taken.
While the politicians and the military leaders argue over how to negotiate with the terrorists, one man is sent in to break through the barrage of panicked responses and political agendas surrounding the chaotic crisis. Mitch Rapp, the CIA’s top counterterrorism operative, makes his way into the White House and soon discovers that the president is not as safe as Washington’s power elite had thought. Moving stealthily among the corridors and secret passageways of the White House, stepping terrifyingly close to the enemy, Rapp scrambles to save the hostages before the terrorists can extract the president from the safety of his bunker. In a race against time, Rapp makes a chilling discovery that could rock Washington to its core: someone within his own government is maneuvering in hopes that his rescue attempt will fail.
With the crackling tension and explosive action that made *Term Limits* “a roller-coaster, edge-of-your-seat thriller” *(Minneapolis Star-Tribune),* Vince Flynn delivers *Transfer of Power* — a blockbuster novel that carries us just beyond today’s headlines.

TransAtlantic

***NEW YORK TIMES* BESTSELLER • LONGLISTED FOR THE MAN BOOKER PRIZE • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY *KIRKUS REVIEWS***
In the National Book Award–winning *Let the Great World Spin,* Colum McCann thrilled readers with a marvelous high-wire act of fiction that *The New York Times Book Review* called“an emotional tour de force.” Now McCann demonstrates once again why he is one of the most acclaimed and essential authors of his generation with a soaring novel that spans continents, leaps centuries, and unites a cast of deftly rendered characters, both real and imagined.

Newfoundland, 1919. Two aviators—Jack Alcock and Arthur Brown—set course for Ireland as they attempt the first nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean, placing their trust in a modified bomber to heal the wounds of the Great War.

Dublin, 1845 and ’46. On an international lecture tour in support of his subversive autobiography, Frederick Douglass finds the Irish people sympathetic to the abolitionist cause—despite the fact that, as famine ravages the countryside, the poor suffer from hardships that are astonishing even to an American slave.

New York, 1998. Leaving behind a young wife and newborn child, Senator George Mitchell departs for Belfast, where it has fallen to him, the son of an Irish-American father and a Lebanese mother, to shepherd Northern Ireland’s notoriously bitter and volatile peace talks to an uncertain conclusion.

These three iconic crossings are connected by a series of remarkable women whose personal stories are caught up in the swells of history. Beginning with Irish housemaid Lily Duggan, who crosses paths with Frederick Douglass, the novel follows her daughter and granddaughter, Emily and Lottie, and culminates in the present-day story of Hannah Carson, in whom all the hopes and failures of previous generations live on. From the loughs of Ireland to the flatlands of Missouri and the windswept coast of Newfoundland, their journeys mirror the progress and shape of history. They each learn that even the most unassuming moments of grace have a way of rippling through time, space, and memory.

The most mature work yet from an incomparable storyteller, *TransAtlantic* is a profound meditation on identity and history in a wide world that grows somehow smaller and more wondrous with each passing year.

“A dazzlingly talented author’s latest high-wire act . . . Reminiscent of the finest work of Michael Ondaatje and Michael Cunningham, *TransAtlantic* is Colum McCann’s most penetrating novel yet.”**—*O: The Oprah Magazine***
* *
“One of the greatest pleasures of *TransAtlantic* is how provisional it makes history feel, how intimate, and intensely real. . . . Here is the uncanny thing McCann finds again and again about the miraculous: that it is inseparable from the everyday.”**—*The Boston Globe***

“Ingenious . . . The intricate connections [McCann] has crafted between the stories of his women and our men [seem] written in air, in water, and—given that his subject is the confluence of Irish and American history—in blood.”**—*Esquire***

“Another sweeping, beautifully constructed tapestry of life . . . Reading McCann is a rare joy.”**—*The Seattle Times***

“Entrancing . . . McCann folds his epic meticulously into this relatively slim volume like an accordion; each pleat holds music—elation and sorrow.”**—*The Denver Post***

Traitor to the Blood

SUMMARY: In the fourth novel of the Noble Dead saga, following Sister of the Dead, Magiere the dhampir and Leesil the half-elf embark on an odyssey in search of the secrets of their mysterious origins and of those responsible for the events that brought them together.

Trainspotting & Headstate

“Trainspotting: filled with graphic realism and wild comedy, the stage adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s phenomenally successful novel skims in and out of blighted lives spinning raw tales of everyday addiction: two dossers are called up to interview for the same shite job neither wants; a gallus lassie, goaded by four failed-Oxbridge twats from the Uni, takes bloody revenge; a skag boy tries to kick it one last time. Gruesome, political, violent and funny – Trainspotting is not to be missed.” “Headstate: Originally conceived as a ‘pre-club night’ rather than a long-running play, this theatre piece, developed in concert with the Boilerhouse Theatre Company, is both a snapshot of and a hard-edged investigation into uncomfortable contemporary truths. Mickey sells love; Tina has given it away; John denies it; and Martin Sykes, the butcher, will always use it for a scam. Headstate is a shocking and humorous look at modern Britain: where we are now and how we got here.”–BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

A Tour of C++

The C++11 standard allows programmers to express ideas more clearly, simply, and directly, and to write faster, more efficient code. Bjarne Stroustrup, the designer and original implementer of C++, thoroughly covers the details of this language and its use in his definitive reference, *The C++ Programming Language, Fourth Edition*.
In ** *A Tour of C++* **, Stroustrup excerpts the overview chapters from that complete reference, expanding and enhancing them to give an experienced programmer–in just a few hours–a clear idea of what constitutes modern C++. In this concise, self-contained guide, Stroustrup covers most major language features and the major standard-library components–not, of course, in great depth, but to a level that gives programmers a meaningful overview of the language, some key examples, and practical help in getting started.
Stroustrup presents the C++ features in the context of the programming styles they support, such as object-oriented and generic programming. His tour is remarkably comprehensive. Coverage begins with the basics, then ranges widely through more advanced topics, including many that are new in C++11, such as move semantics, uniform initialization, lambda expressions, improved containers, random numbers, and concurrency. The tour ends with a discussion of the design and evolution of C++ and the extensions added for C++11.
This guide does not aim to teach you how to program (see Stroustrup’s *Programming: Principles and Practice Using C++ *for that); nor will it be the only resource you’ll need for C++ mastery (see Stroustrup’s *The C++ Programming Language, Fourth Edition*, for that). If, however, you are a C or C++ programmer wanting greater familiarity with the current C++ language, or a programmer versed in another language wishing to gain an accurate picture of the nature and benefits of modern C++, you can’t find a shorter or simpler introduction than this tour provides.
